Free meditation for health workshop | TideChange

Dr. Tom Diamond is offering a free introduction to health meditating, where you will learn skills and tools to help you relax deeply, cope with stress, improve health and explore personal development. This one hour workshop will be held on Friday January 25th, 10:45am, at Freedom Now Yoga Studio, 333 Fifth Street in downtown Courtenay.

Meditation is simply profound relaxation. When your body fully relaxes, it fuels amazing healing and life changes. The more relaxed you become, the more control you gain over your health and well-being.

Research statistics show that approximately 50% of all adults have trouble sleeping every week and almost 20% experience serious insomnia.? Stress may be the cause of more than 60% of all health problems, particularly chronic issues such as insomnia, fatigue and hypertension.

Meditation can help people of any age or fitness level learn to relax deeply, reduce stress and improve sleep, energy, blood pressure, pain, alertness, weight loss and many health issues.

Through profound relaxation, health meditating strengthens your mind and nervous system, which gives you more control over your health and well-being. Your breathing and blood circulation improve. You sleep better, fight off the effects of stress and rebound more quickly from disease and injury. As your body?s natural healing capacities increase, you feel better and more motivated toward healthy foods, exercise and other positive lifestyle choices.

Dr. Diamond offers a range of services including individual consultations and group workshops, along with weekly drop-in group meditation sessions.? Please call 250-941-5596 or visit his website www.healthmeditating.com for more information.

Introducing Building the Team: Flower Power - NYTimes.com

Three years ago, I knew nothing about flowers.

Today, I am chief executive of what I believe is the world?s fastest growing flower delivery service, operating in five cities, with $18 million in venture capital and more than 80 employees.

My background is in business, entrepreneurship and technology. I studied entrepreneurial management at the University of Pennsylvania?s Wharton School for my undergraduate degree. After college, I moved to San Francisco and joined a software start-up, Callidus Software, as one of its first business hires. Our task was to figure out whether we could sell the software to anyone. Thankfully, we did. We grew the business to more than $100 million in revenue, taking the company public in 2003. I was 28 at the time. I ultimately became senior vice president of global sales, responsible for 76 employees in offices around the world.

It was an amazing first ride, but I was feeling dissatisfied for two reasons. First, as the 800-pound gorilla in a very small market, we were as big as we were ever going to be. Plus, the product was boring. If I described it here, you would fall asleep.

I wanted more. I wanted the chance to build something great, something with a product that people loved and that had a chance to be a really big business. However, I?m not Mark Zuckerberg. I don?t know how to code, and I have no idea how to create a market that doesn?t already exist. But I am willing to work really hard. So, I took a year off to come up with the next great idea.

I left the software company in 2009. My thesis was simple: try to apply technology to a really big, existing market that was bereft of technology, preferably a market with a product people love. I considered all sorts of industries before stumbling upon flowers.

It turns out that the flower industry is a $35 billion dollar market in the United States alone. That?s right, $35 billion. That was certainly enough to pique my interest. But I didn?t know anything about flowers, so I did the only thing I could think of to learn more. I put an ad on Craigslist, saying that I wanted to buy a flower shop. I got dozens of responses, and spent the next two weeks at Chelsea Market in Manhattan, sitting in front of one of the city?s best espresso stands, meeting with flower shop owners (and drinking inordinate amounts of coffee).

From these meetings, I learned that flower shop owners (there are approximately 22,000 of them in the United States) are extraordinary artists. They create living art every day that customers love. But they don?t have a background in technology, and they don?t necessarily enjoy the business side of things. Moreover, they deal with a huge economic challenge: spoilage. The average rate in the industry is anywhere from 30 to 50 percent. It?s a tough way to run a business. The only way that the shop owners can make money, as a result, is to mark up the price of flowers to five times what they pay for them. This was my moment of epiphany.

I knew that there was a type of customer ? hotels, restaurants, retailers, offices, buildings, spas, and affluent households ? that viewed flowers as living art, something to be enjoyed continuously. But their flowers died every week. These customers were perfect candidates for a subscription model: sign up once and receive this luxurious product, hand-delivered to your door every week. For H.Bloom, my new company, the subscription model was the silver bullet. It would allow us to buy only what someone had already subscribed for, thus reducing spoilage almost completely.

I emerged from my year off ready to start what I thought would become the Tiffany of flowers ? a game-changing business that would eventually be a world-recognized brand. But I?m sure a lot of people thought I was crazy. I was leaving a successful career in enterprise software to start a flower company? Thankfully, a good friend told me to keep my own counsel. I had come up with the idea; the logic was sound; just make it happen.

And the idea worked. We launched H.Bloom in April of 2010 in New York City. We signed corporate customers, impressed them with our designs, provided them with 20- to 30-percent savings off the vendors they had used previously, and most importantly, we offered world-class service thanks to the software we built to make operations run efficiently. Soon after, we opened H.Bloom in other cities ? Washington, then Chicago, San Francisco and most recently, Dallas ? and they have done well.

As we thought about our growth plans, we realized that to grow quickly, we would have to expand to new cities fast. While we? believed that our software would enable these markets to deliver our luxury flowers in a sophisticated way, we knew that it would take great people to make everything work. If we hired the wrong people, or didn?t provide them with the right training, the operation would simply not function. So, we decided to build our own farm team ? a formal talent-development program ? to groom future leaders and team members to run new H.Bloom markets. We call the program H.Bloom University.

Today, many of our employees ? managers, future managers, sales people, operations folks and floral designers ? are participating in the program. Five people have graduated successfully from the future-leaders program (called SEED) and are now leading H.Bloom markets. We have focused on all aspects of building the team ? from defining needed positions, to recruiting the right candidates, hiring them, training them, providing them with a road map for career growth and constantly communicating the strategy, successes and failures of our business. We?ve also had to let people go. We view all of this as integral to building the team. We?re not good at it yet, but we aspire to be great.

And that brings me to why I?m writing for this blog. I love business and want to build an extraordinary one. I believe that building a team and developing talent is the foundation of any business, no matter how big or small, but it is often overlooked amid all of the other things that happen day to day. I hope to use this blog as a way to share our experiences and to get your feedback on what you?ve seen work and fail in your businesses. In the coming weeks, I?ll be writing about the five main areas that we focus on as we try to build a team: recruiting, training, communications, career development, and leadership. I will also talk about team builders that I?ve met and that we try to emulate and some of the new technologies that we use to manage the process.

During new-hire training at H.Bloom, I always tell new employees that together, we have the opportunity to build a great company. With Building the Team, I am hopeful that together, we can discover how to build a great team.

Kim Kardashian reveals she had fertility issues

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Kim Kardashian's pregnancy (with Kanye West) didn't just come as a surprise to her worldwide audience, it took the reality star by surprise, too. Why? Well, as she revealed to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Tuesday, it turns out she faced fertility issues similar to her sister, Khloe's.

"Khloe has been very open about her fertility issues and I think I was always really kind of quiet about mine, and I have similar issues, and so it was a pleasant surprise when so many doctors were telling me one thing and then the opposite happens," she said. "That?s an exciting moment, you can plan for things like that. So I think it's just such a blessing knowing my circumstances."

Kim, 32, explained she would be due in July, which might make her firstborn's birthday coincide with her sister Kourtney's latest child, Penelope, who was born last summer. (Kourtney was also on hand, as the two discussed the start of the next season of their E! show, "Kourtney & Kim Take Miami.")

Kim also mentioned a conversation she and Kourtney had off-camera about how some large families handle babysitting and ... other issues.

"(Kourtney) said that in the old days, and maybe we should try this ... one sister should babysit all the kids ... so I can go out out or vice-versa and, you know, whichever sister is babysitting should breastfeed all the kids that are there," said Kim.

Kourtney insisted that her words were twisted in the translation. "I said, that's what they did back in the day. I didn't say that let's try this."

Still, don't count on the Kardashians sharing breastfeeding duties. Even though Kourtney said the idea didn't "freak" her out, Kim was uncomfortable with the notion.

Such sisterly discussions will no doubt be the focus of their show's new season. Meanwhile, there are still burning questions about Kim's marital status: Even though her marriage to Kris Humphries lasted just 72 days, he has reportedly declined to sign papers to complete the divorce. "I can't speak for anyone else (about why Kris hasn't signed)," said Kim. "It's a process. ... It's happening, hopefully."

So once that is all taken care of, will there be wedding bells in the air for Kim and Kanye? They did just buy a house together.?

"It's something that we talk about, but I think it's just right now (we're) focusing on the baby," said Kim. "What I've learned in life is -- I was always such a planner, and ... you think your life is going to be a certain way, and the best surprises just happen when you don't plan."

But that wasn't all the ladies had to share on TODAY Tuesday; they returned later on to chat with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. Kim acknowledged that she might actually have her child while still married to Humphries ("I hope not") but also recognized that some of her future is just out of her hands. "As much as I would love to be divorced and we're working on it and I hope it's sooner than later ... what are you going to do?"?

Once the baby has arrived, however, Kim seemed clear on how she plans to parent, particularly in terms of sleeping arrangements.

"I'm definitely going to be a different mom than Kourtney," she said. "I'm going to share my bedroom with my boyfriend, unlike her..... She loves to have the baby sleep in bed with her at night." And not just the baby, said Kim -- 3-year-old Mason is also part of the family bed in Kourtney's house, it appears. "I see my other friends that put their babies in their own room and put them to bed at a set time, so they can go out and have date night."

"Let's see what happens," said Kourtney, knowingly.

"Kourtney & Kim Take Miami" returns to E! on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 9 p.m.

TrestmanReuters

In the end, Jimmy Johnson was right.

The former Cowboys and Dolphins coach said Friday that Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman would become the next head coach of the Bears and, five days later, that?s precisely what Trestman is.

And so the Bears are making the type of outside-the-box move that Johnson?s former boss in Dallas, Jerry Jones, recently suggested NFL franchises may need to make to break the cycle of parity.

In Tuesday?s edition of Pro Football Talk, Erik Kuselias suggested that perhaps Johnson?s tweet was a trial balloon aimed at gauging fan and media reaction to the prospect of hiring a head coach who has been out of the NFL for eight years.? The fact that the Bears had no other candidates who jumped off the page as obvious ?A?-listers possibly contributed to the absence of a strong negative reaction to Trestman.

Or perhaps there was no strong negative reaction to Trestman because no one really knows what to think about him, since he?s been out of the NFL?s sight for so long.? He spent 17 years as an NFL assistant with the Vikings, Bucs, Browns, 49ers, Lions, Cardinals, Raiders, and Dolphins, never getting a chance to become a head coach at the highest level of the sport in the more usual way.

Trestman still has plenty of supporters.? Former NFL coaches Bud Grant and Marv Levy have vouched for him, as has Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young.

But Trestman largely remains an unknown commodity, and the biggest unknown is and will be his ability to work with quarterback Jay Cutler, who has one year left on his contract.? Trestman may decide after the coming year that he doesn?t want Cutler.? Cutler may decide after the coming year that he doesn?t want Trestman.

Of course, the fact that Trestman helped mentor Cutler before the 2006 draft may help the two get along now; the Bears were sure to make that point in the official release announcing the hire.

All we know at this point is that the lawyer-turned-coach will finally get his chance to run an NFL team of his own, and the stakes will be fairly high, for plenty of people.

2 killed, 1 wounded in shooting at Ky. college

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? A gunman firing into a vehicle killed two people and wounded a juvenile Tuesday as they sat in the parking lot of an eastern Kentucky community college.

The campus was locked down for more than an hour while police searched the two buildings of Hazard Community and Technical College in Hazard, Ky., to ensure there was no further danger before allowing students to leave, police told a news conference broadcast live on WYMT-TV's website.

College President Stephen Greiner said that at the time of the shooting, there were probably about 30 students on campus, which is based 90 miles southeast of Lexington, Ky.

Police recovered the weapon, a semiautomatic pistol, at the scene, Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen said. He said a man who walked into an office of the Kentucky State Police in Hazard and said he knew something about the shooting was being questioned as a suspect. The man had not been charged with a crime and no other suspects had been identified at the time of the news conference, which was held about three hours after the shooting.

A male and female were already dead when police arrived about 6 p.m., Allen said. The wounded juvenile, a female, was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital, he said.

A hospital spokeswoman said she could not provide any information about the juvenile's condition without a name, which police did not release.

Police believe the shooting may have been the result of a domestic dispute, Allen said. He didn't know the relationship between the victims and the shooter.

In a statement released late Tuesday, college officials said they did not think the school was specifically targeted or that any of the people involved in the shooting were either students or employees of the college.

Conor Duff, the college's evening coordinator, said the outbreak of violence was startling.

"Everybody here's been pretty shook up," he said. "This is definitely something people around here are not used to. We have our fair share of problems, but normally this isn't one of them."

Classes had resumed Monday at the campus after the holiday break, according to the college's website, which also posted that there had been an incident and asked students to stay away from the main campus. The school called off classes for Wednesday.

The college's academic programs range from associate's degrees in arts and sciences to career-focused training in mining technology and heavy-equipment operation.

A Simple Guide to Trademarks, Copyrights and Patents

Your company?s intellectual property?from your logo to trade secrets?can be just as valuable as physical assets. This is particularly true for digital startups. Yet, taking the necessary legal steps to protect your intellectual property can be costly and time-consuming, often burdening a young business before it gets off the ground. It?s a delicate balance to determine what actions to take and when, but the following is a primer on the various types of intellectual property.

Trademarks

A trademark is a word, phrase, name or symbol that identifies the source of a product or service and distinguishes it from competitors. A trademark would apply to your company name, product names, logos, and taglines.

Trademarks don?t actually have to be registered with the USPTO (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office). If your company creates a logo or name that you want to use exclusively, you can attach the TM symbol and this essentially gives you ?common law? rights. However, in case anyone ends up using your name or logo without your permission, you?ve got a much better chance of winning an infringement suit against them if you actually registered your trademark. And with formal trademark registration, it?s also exponentially easier for you to recover your digital properties?for example, if someone happens to be using a close variation of your domain name or is using your company name as their Twitter handle.

When it comes to trademarking, there?s often some confusion surrounding the company name. Many young companies think that once they incorporate or form an LLC, they have registered and protected their name. The act of incorporating does indeed register your business name within your state of incorporation?but that won?t stop someone else from using your name in any of the 49 other states.

To register your business name, you?ll need to file an application either directly with the USPTO or have an online legal filing service file it for you. Expect to pay approximately $325 in application fees per class that your mark would fall under. The process can take anywhere from six months to a year once you submit your application. It?s also smart to perform a comprehensive trademark search before starting the application process to make sure your name is available (you won?t get an application refund just because your name isn?t available).

Copyrights

A copyright protects ?original works of authorships.? For digital startups, this typically means website copy, marketing material and possibly even computer code.

By law, a copyright exists the moment something is written, photographed, drawn, etc. As soon as you write and publish the copy on your website, you automatically own a copyright for this work?and are able to use the copyright symbol ? and the terminology ?All Rights Reserved.?

If copyright protection exists without registration, why register? Formal registration is a prerequisite if you decide to sue someone for copyright infringement. That?s because copyright registration gives you a public record of ownership.

You can register online through the U.S. Copyright Office or have a legal online filing service handle it for you. Registering a copyright is relatively straightforward and affordable. So if it?s important to you to have the ability to take legal action in case someone copies part of your rebsite or whitepaper without your permission, then it makes sense to register a copyright.

Patents

A patent gives an inventor the exclusive rights to manufacture, use or sell an invention for a certain number of years. Patents cover tangible things, and can include software processes, product design and other inventions. For example, Twitter has a patent on the ?pull-to-refresh? function found in Twitter?s iPhone app, while Coca-Cola patented the unique shape of its original bottle.

Before applying for a patent, you should ask yourself the following questions: Is your product or idea original? Is it useful? And is it not obvious to others with basic skills in your field? For example, Amazon?s patent for its one-click ordering system was rejected by the European Patent Office (EPO) for being too obvious and non-inventive.

When you register your invention with the government, you get the legal right to exclude anyone else from manufacturing or marketing it. You also get to use terminology like ?patented technology? or ?patent-pending technology? (for a provisional patent) in your marketing material. And patents have value?they can be sold as assets and are often factored into funding or acquisition deals.

Acquiring a patent can take up to six years and hundreds of hours of work. Due to the complexity of the process, most companies turn to an attorney, patent agent or licensing firm?this can mean approximately $7,000 to $15,000 in attorney fees. Ideally, your IP pro will understand and specialize in your particular market, which can make the process more efficient.

Because the investment required to file a patent is so high, many startups struggle to know the right time to apply. While there?s no single right answer for everyone, keep the following things in mind.

When you submit your paperwork to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, you secure your priority date. This means that if another company starts doing something similar after your filing date, they?re infringing on your patent (and could be ordered to stop). If you wait?perhaps until your product is ready to launch or your company has more cash flow?you won?t have a case if someone starts doing what your patent is about. And you miss the opportunity to patent the idea or product.

In some cases, a company can spend thousands on getting a patent, only to discover that their product is not commercially viable. Or in other cases, by the time the product is finally ready for market, it has gone through so many iterations, that it?s no longer completely covered by the original patent, and the company needs to apply for a brand new patent or Continuation-In-Part application.

Be aware that the USPTO also gives you the option to file for a provisional patent. This entails a simpler and lower-cost filing procedure and lets you stake your claim for 12 months from the filing date. However, this 12-month period is non-renewable, so you?ve got to file a full patent application within the year.

No matter which IP strategy is right for you, it?s best to evaluate your options and plan your strategy early on. Filing for a trademark or copyright is often simple enough to take care of on your own or with the help of an online filing service. If patenting is in the cards, it?s best to search out a reputable patent attorney to discuss your options in your company?s early days so you?re not scrambling at the last minute.

Investing to Belong: Equity Crowdfunding and Return on Investment

Editor's Note: The following comes to us from David Dupee, founder of crowdfunding platform CraftFund.?Dupee writes in to explore the psychology that drives crowfunding, specifically examining millennials' investing behavior. Follow the platform's progress on Twitter @CraftFund.

The JOBS Act has been hailed as an opportunity for the average investor to invest in the next Facebook and yield the kind of financial returns once only available to angel and accredited investors.

Based on reports, the SEC?s delay in finalizing regulations is due to investor protection issues and concerns of fraud, a concern which is largely premised on the assumption that investors are primarily motivated by a financial return. While financial returns will certainly motivate equity crowdfunding, I believe that equity crowdfunding will be driven just as much by a desire to engage and belong. There are two reasons for this:

Small investment amounts

First, the prospect of significant financial returns are tempered by the strict investment caps Congress wrote into the JOBS Act that will limit most Americans to between $2000-$5000 in crowdfund investments per year. Most returns on this kind of investment will be modest, which suggests that many won?t choose to invest simply to become rich.

Those with higher net worth (?accredited investors?) will be able to invest much larger amounts and could be enticed primarily by significant returns, but this is a very small percentage of total investors and a group that already can make these investments.

Millennial behavior

Second, as the most active group on current crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, tech savvy millennials are expected to be the key demographic for equity crowdfunding. Millennials approach investments differently than older generations. It is well documented that mutual funds and other traditional investment models have struggled to attract the millennial group that seems to favor more customized and participatory options. For this reason, millennials will be more likely to view equity crowdfunding as an experience as much as an investment.

BrewDog Illustration

Scottish brewery BrewDog perfectly illustrates how equity crowdfunding is motivated by both a financial return and a desire to belong. Needing money to finance expansion, BrewDog recently turned to craft beer lovers, a crowd heavily populated by millennials.

Termed ?Equity for Punks?, BrewDog sold two rounds of shares to the public through an online mechanism. In the second round the brewery offered 90,000 B shares to the general public with a minimum investment of 4 shares for ?95. The campaign was an incredible success and sold out within 6 months, raising over ?2 million from nearly 6000 investors. In return for the investment, BrewDog offered a financial return as one component of a broader membership experience that included the following:

  • Lifetime 5% discount in all BrewDog bars
  • 10% discount on beers and merchandise from their website
  • First options on special and limited edition BrewDog beers
  • Entry into the 'AGM' (shareholders meeting and event)
  • The thrill of owning part of BrewDog (albeit a very, very small part)
  • Your very own BrewDog I.D.
  • Potential financial return but not for the next two years as no dividend will be paid until at least 2013

The average investor invested more (?372) than the minimum ?95 investment amount, suggesting membership in the community was not the sole motivating factor and that investors were at least in part motivated by the prospect of a financial return.

However, it is striking that most of the perks offered were experiential and psychological in nature. Indeed, in its recent article on crowdfunding, the Harvard Business Review studied BrewDog?s campaign and concluded that the excitement it generated ?was as much about belonging somewhere as it was about money.?

Conclusion

BrewDog?s ?Equity for Punks? campaign provides helpful insight into the psychology of equity crowdfunding. Here in the U.S., there are over 2000 breweries and many other small businesses in desperate need of an alternative source of capital to help finance expansion. At the same time, there are also millions of potential investors looking to connect with and become a part of their favorite brands.

The likelihood that equity crowdfunding will challenge traditional assumptions about return on investment should frame our discussion of investor protection and other issues related to this exciting new source of capital formation.

?Graph Search will appear as a bigger search bar at the top of each page,? Facebook explained in a press release. ?When you search for something, that search not only determines the set of results you get, but also serves as a title for the page. You can edit the title ? and in doing so create your own custom view of the content you and your friends have shared on Facebook.?

[More from BGR: Extensive BlackBerry Z10 demo video posted by German website [video]]

The release continued, ?Graph Search and web search are very different. Web search is designed to take a set of keywords (for example: ?hip hop?) and provide the best possible results that match those keywords. With Graph Search you combine phrases (for example: ?my friends in New York who like Jay-Z?) to get that set of people, places, photos or other content that?s been shared on Facebook. We believe they have very different uses.?

Users can sign up for the Graph Search beta on Facebook?s website.

ERG launches in-house finance division

Investment sales firm recently merged with mortgage brokerage JG Capital

January 14, 2013 05:30PM
By Guelda Voien

Jason Au, of ERG Property Advisors? new finance division

ERG Property Advisors, the Manhattan-based investment sales brokerage launched in 2009, has formed a finance division, company executives told The Real Deal. The new division will broker both traditional and non-traditional loans between $500,000 and $50 million for ERG buyers, new division head Jason Au said. Au comes from mortgage broker JG Capital, which merged with ERG last August. The new five-person team should expand to nine brokers in the next six months, Au said.

As far as the timing of the new division launch late last year, Au pointed to low interest rates and lots of available private money.

?It just made sense, [to launch the division] because ERG has started to build a pretty nice reputation,? Au said. ?We want to go out there and make a splash and make smart deals.?

Among ERG?s current listings is a development site at 2211 Third Avenue in Harlem, with 125,000 buildable square feet, a representative for ERG said. The asking price for the parcel is $11.5 million.

And ERG is building on JG Capital?s history of taking advantage of market conditions. JG Capital was formed in 1993, amid tightened lending in a real estate market where very little was trading. The firm began marketing traditional bank loans at that time, but in 2009, in another eriod of economic turmoil, JG Capital formed its first private fund, HVB Two LLC, which originates loans in the $500,000 to $2 million range, Au said.

Au now runs that fund, while ERG Chairman James Guarino runs the company?s new larger fund, called NYRE Loan Fund I LLC. That fund originates loans in the $2 million to $50 million range, he said.

Au could not disclose the interest rates for the private bridge loans, but said that those loans were about 35 percent of ERG?s finance division?s business.

?Banks are aggressively lending ? the private money is available,? Au said. ?It?s a good time to make a mark.?

Church destroyed by fire in south Nashville

A church that had been in the Bell Road area more than four decades was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon.

According to dispatchers, the two-alarm?fire was reported just after 1 p.m. at the Bell Road Church of the Nazarene.

Witnesses said the smoke and fire was visible from over a mile away.

The roof started to buckle, so the chief on the scene pulled his crews out to be safe.

It's a good thing, too, because the roof ended up collapsing.

The building was built in the 1970s, so old wiring could be a possibility.

Also, storms were rolling through at the time, so lightning is also a potential factor.

Church officials said this is not the first time the church was destroyed by fire, and the congregation plans to rebuild.

No injuries were reported. There's still no word yet on what started the blaze.

Building electronics from the ground up

Jan. 14, 2013 ? There's hardly a moment in modern life that doesn't involve electronic devices, whether they're guiding you to a destination by GPS or deciding which incoming messages merit a beep, ring or vibration. But our expectation that the next shopping season will inevitably offer an upgrade to more-powerful gadgets largely depends on size -- namely, the ability of the industry to shrink transistors so that more can fit on ever-tinier chip surfaces.

Engineers have been up to the task of electronics miniaturization for decades now, and the principle that the computer industry will be able to do it on a regular schedule -- as codified in Moore's Law -- won't come into doubt any time soon, thanks to researchers like the University of South Carolina's Chuanbing Tang.

Tang is a leader in constructing miniscule structures from the bottom up, rather than the top down. Currently, modern electronics are primarily fabricated by the latter method: the smooth surface of a starting material -- say, a wafer of silicon -- is etched through micro- or nanolithography to establish a pattern on it. The top-down method might involve a prefabricated template, such as a photomask, to establish the pattern. But the approach is becoming more and more challenging, because reducing the size of the features on the requisite templates is getting extremely expensive as engineers work their way further down the nanoscale. "Going from 500 to sub-30 nanometers is cost prohibitive for large-scale production," said Tang, an assistant professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry in USC's College of Arts and Sciences.

As a chemist, Tang uses a bottom-up approach: he works with the individual molecules that go onto a surface, coaxing them to self-arrange into the patterns needed. One established method of doing this involves block copolymers, in which a polymer chain is made up of two or more sections of different polymerized monomers.

If the different block sections are properly designed, the blocks will self-aggregate when placed on a surface, and the aggregation can be harnessed to create desirable patterns on the nanoscale without the need for any templates. Di-block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) and polystyrene, for example, have been used to construct highly ordered arrays of perpendicular cylinders of nanoscale materials. Solvent evaporation, or annealing, of these polymers on surfaces exerts an external directional field that can enhance the patterning process and create nearly defect-free arrays.

Tang's laboratory just published a paper for the special "Emerging Investigators 2013" issue of the journal Chemical Communications that takes this method to a new level. Working together with graduate student Christopher Hardy, Tang led a team that fabricated nanoparticles of pure, crystalline iron oxide with controlled size and spacing on silicon wafers by covalently incorporating a ferrocene moiety into a tri-block copolymer.

Incorporating metals into nanoscale designs is crucial for fabricating electronic devices, and Tang's method is a step forward for the field. Because ferrocene is covalently bonded to the block copolymer, there is no need for a complexation step to add a metal-containing compound to the surface -- a burdensome requirement of most previous methods. Moreover, their technique is a step beyond related polymer systems that contain covalent ferrocenylsilane linkages, in which removal of the organic components leaves behind silicon oxide as an impurity in the metal oxide.

The technique is a promising addition to the available tools for addressing the chronic need to decrease the size of electronic components. "The industry won't replace top-down methods," Tang said, "but they plan to use bottom-up together with the existing top-down methods soon."

There's versatility in the technique as well. "Here we use a ferrocene-containing polymer, which we convert into the inorganic iron oxide. But if we replace the ferrocene in the polymer with carbon precursor, we could make a perpendicular carbon nanorod, which would have a lot of potential uses," Tang said. "Or we can incorporate a semi-conducting polymer, like polythiophene, which would be very useful in solar cell applications."

The work was supported by Semiconductor Research Corporation (Task ID 2222.001) and National Science Foundation (CHE-1151479).

Sony Patents New Move Designed to Break Your Neck

It seems Sony filed a patent in September for some new Move technology that, by the looks of it, simply screams?bad idea, guys.

The patent, which can be downloaded in PDF form from Free Patents Online, describes motion capture similar to how Move functions now?by two-dimensionally tracking the light-emitting diodes?as well as ?another operation for capturing sound data emitted by the controller,? which?allows for three-dimensional tracking.

Insert Batman joke here.

The patent also shows how the controller?s face plate can be swapped out and how two of these controllers can be connected side-by-side or by their handles, making them into a double-bladed double-orbed controller (seen below).

University City senator's bill would require parents to notify schools if they own guns

Each time a gunman enters a school, or a theater, or a mall and begins randomly killing people, our nation grieves and struggles to understand how such tragedies occur.?

The woman who authored that statement, Sen. Maria Chapelle-Nadal, D-University City, has filed a bill that would require all parents who own guns to notify their local schools. Failure to do do would be a crime.

SB 124, a response to the December slayings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., also calls for the following:

-Creates a crime of failure to prevent children from accessing firearms.

-Creates the crime of negligent storage of a firearm

-Makes both of the above crimes a misdemeanors unless the guns are used to "kill or injure another person."

The bill's summary is printed below:

This act creates the offense of failing to stop illegal firearm possession. A person commits the offense if he or she is the parent or guardian of a child under the age of 18, he or she knows the child possesses a firearm in violation of the law, and he or she fails to stop the possession or report it to law enforcement.

The offense is a Class A misdemeanor unless death or injury results from the firearm possession in which case it is a Class D felony.

This act also creates the offense of negligent storage of a firearm. A parent or guardian of a child under the age of 18 commits the offense by recklessly storing or leaving a firearm in a manner that is likely to result in the child accessing the firearm if the child obtains access to the firearm and unlawfully carries it to school, kills or injures another person with it, or commits a crime with it.

A firearm that is in a secure location or locked is not considered to be recklessly stored or left in a manner likely to result in the child accessing the firearm.

The offense is a Class A misdemeanor unless the child kills or injures another person in which case it is a Class D felony.

The parent or guardian of a child injured or killed by a firearm may only be prosecuted for negligent storage of a firearm if he or she was grossly negligent.

This act requires a parent or guardian to notify a school district, or the governing body of a private or charter school, that he or she owns a firearm within 30 days of enrolling the child in school or becoming the owner of a firearm.

The written notification only needs to include the names of the parent and any child attending the school and the fact that the parent owns a firearm.

A person only needs to send one written notification if he or she has multiple children attending the school or becomes the owner of additional firearms. Any time a new child is enrolled in a school the parent or guardian must send an updated notification with the new child's name.

Failure to notify the school under this act is an infraction, punishable by a fine of up to $100. If a person is found guilty of negligent storage of a firearm and has failed to notify the school of firearm ownership, the person must be fined $1,000 in addition to any other penalties authorized by law.

Sen. Chapelle-Nadal indicated she would take steps to prevent school shootings in her statement following the Sandy Hook murders:

At a time like this, it is difficult to know how to respond to the mass killing of innocent souls and impossible to find words to comfort the survivors. Unfortunately, we have had far too many times like this. Each time a gunman enters a school, or a theater, or a mall and begins randomly killing people, our nation grieves and struggles to understand how such tragedies occur. We debate the effectiveness of our mental health programs, we argue over gun control measurers, we vow it will never happen again, and then it does. The fact most of the latest victims are young children shocks our conscience, but will it motivate us to consider meaningful change? Perhaps the answer lies not with our leaders in Washington, D. C. but with ourselves, in our communities. As a member of the University City School Board, I have requested a full review of our school district's safety policies and procedures for consideration at our next meeting. I intend to file meaningful legislation in the Missouri Senate addressing the plague of gun violence in our schools. Education is among my top priorities as a legislator, but children cannot learn if they do not feel safe. I do not pretend to have the answers, but I do intend to begin asking serious questions in search of serious solutions. At this time, we grieve with the parents, the grandparents and the brothers and sisters of those lost in this latest episode of senseless violence. Going forward, our solemn duty must be to ensure it does not happen again.

The bill received its first reading Wednesday.

Globe presenters would make fine couples

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

Yeah, yeah, we know George Clooney and Stacy Keibler match up just fine, and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have their thing going on. But the couples who looked best Sunday night at the Golden Globe Awards were the unintentional ones, paired only as presenters.

Here are some of the best twosomes from the night.

Kate Hudson and Bradley Cooper

Paul Drinkwater / AP

We're not sure who's prettier here. Whatever he's got in that "Silver Linings Playbook" needs to include a substitution for Hudson's real man. On three. Hut!

Amanda Seyfried and Robert Pattinson

Paul Drinkwater / AP

KStew who? The "Les Miserables" actress knows a thing or two about "Big Love" and she seems to have enough of a youthful psuedo-goth thing going on to land herself a vampire.

Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell

Paul Drinkwater / AP

Who says comedians can't rock the bare midriff? Wigg looked great (next to Ferrell's mustache) and the two "Saturday Night Live" alums made a strong case for why they'd be as good as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler running the show.

John Krasinski and Kristen Bell

Paul Drinkwater / Reuters

OK, so Bell is pregnant with another man's baby (sorry, Dax), but we know Krasinski has already proven himself to be a good dad, at least when it comes to his role as Jim on "The Office" (sorry, Pam).

Salma Hayek and Paul Rudd

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

They presented "Homeland" star Damien Lewis with his best actor award on Sunday night, so maybe they can check with Sgt. Brody about any tips he has for sneaking around on one's significant other.

'A Dark Truth' and 'Side By Side' premiere in Sedona Jan. 22-25

logo_SIFFSedona AZ (January 13, 2013) ? The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premieres of ?A Dark Truth? and ?Side By Side? at its Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Both films will show Jan. 22-25 at the festival?s arthouse theatre venue in West Sedona.

A DARK TRUTH

?A Dark Truth? ? an environmental thriller ? features an award-winning, all-star ensemble cast including Andy Garcia, Kim Coates, Deborah Kara Unger, Eva Longoria and Forest Whitaker.

Andy Garcia plays a former CIA operative turned political talk show host, who is hired by a corporate whistle blower (Unger) to expose her company?s cover-up of a massacre in a South American village. When he arrives, he is plunged into a violent and chaotic situation, with the military cracking down on a group of protesters led by a pair of activists (Longoria and Whitaker). The ever-increasing depletion of earth?s natural resource of water serves as the backdrop for this thought-provoking environmental thriller.

In a story filled with a core mythical ethos of family, power and corruption, ?A Dark Truth? focuses on the exposure of evil corporate deeds, greed and misconduct in the third world being brought to light.

20130113_A-Dark-Truth21

The film draws attention to man?s inhumanity and unconscious actions against the environment and questions if there is a moral and ethical obligation when talking about boundaries, borders and human interaction. With the ever-increasing depletion of earth?s natural resource of water serving as the backdrop, a multi-national corporation disregards basic human needs that result in widespread illness and a people?s uprising. The distress causes unlikely allies to conspire and seek redemption for past deeds and the greater good.

??A Dark Truth? is a call to action. It?s an awakening for us to recognize what we are doing to the planet and how it is affecting other people and that we need to do something about it,? proclaimed Forest Whitaker.

SIDE BY SIDE

?Side By Side? is a must-see for anyone who loves film and the art of filmmaking. Plus, it is the perfect film to see in the weeks leading up to the 19th Annual Sedona International Film Festival.

Join Keanu Reeves on a tour of the past and the future of filmmaking in ?Side By Side?. The film features in-depth interviews with Hollywood masters, such as James Cameron, David Fincher, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Steven Soderbergh, and many more.

Since the invention of cinema, the standard format for recording moving images has been film. Over the past two decades, a new form of digital filmmaking has emerged, creating a groundbreaking evolution in the medium. Reeves explores the development of cinema and the impact of digital filmmaking.

?We aim to show what artists and filmmakers have been able to accomplish with both film and digital and how their needs and innovations have helped push filmmaking in new directions,? said Keanu Reeves, who is also the film?s producer. ?Interviews with directors, cinematographers, colorists, scientists, engineers and artists will reveal their experiences and feelings about working with film and digital, where we are now, how we got here and what the future may bring.?

Both films will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Jan. 22-25. Showtimes for ?A Dark Truth? will be 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. ?Side By Side? will show at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

Tickets are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A, in West Sedona. For more information, visit: www.SedonaFilmFestival.org.

Facebook rumored to show off new phone or mobile OS on Tuesday

Facebook is holding what is considered to be a major press event on Tuesday. Press from all over the world has been invited and an event in London is running simultaneously. According to sources for Tech Crunch, the big deal has to do with something mobile related. Immediately your mind goes to a Facebook phone and there is good reason for that. A Facebook phone has been rumored since the days of Lincoln.? Ok. perhaps that is getting carried away, but as far back as 2010, a Facebook phone was being talked about.

Once tabled for discussion, rumors of a Facebook phone had started back up in the last few months. As recently as November, we told you about a device called the HTC Opera UL that is supposed to be a true Facebook phone with a mid 2013 launch. A true Facebook phone is a lot different than 2011's HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa, which had a dedicated Facebook button and limited Facebook integration.

But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has constantly denied the existence of a Facebook phone so many times that he just might be telling the truth. As a result, there also is some speculation that what Facebook will show off on Tuesday won't be an actual phone, but will be something related to the mobile phone ecosystem like a Facebook mobile OS. If that is the case, we would expect it to be an offshoot of Android, or related to webOS, which HP has recently made available as open source software.

Memories are short. If it turns out that we see Mark Zuckerberg holding a new Facebook phone up in the air while the cameras click away, will anyone really be upset that they were lied to? Denials are just part of the way the game is played in the business world. Regardless of whether it is a Facebook phone or a mobile OS announced on Tuesday, it will bring another choice to the consumer and if there is one thing we've learned over the years, more choices lead to more innovation which is something we can all benefit from.

source: TechCrunch

UPDATE: A new report suggests that the press conference on Tuesday will also include the introduction of a Facebook Messenger app for the Apple iPad. Features are said to include emoticons, the ability to share photos, location tagging, group messaging, and receipt reading. The new voice recording messaging feature that has been available for the Apple iPhone will also be part of the new app. This alone is not a big enough deal to warrant a major press event, so perhaps we will still see that Facebook phone or Facebook mobile OS.

Microsoft Surface Pro: New Low Power Intel CPU To Bring Longer Battery Life ?

The Microsoft Surface RT has been around for a couple of months, but as we all know by now, the RT hasn?t been as successful as Microsoft would?ve liked. Nonetheless, the Surface Pro might save Microsoft?s tablet efforts and once it hits the shelves, it could turn out to be a bigger success than its more affordable (yet not as good) counterpart.

There are however a few issues to consider, and that?s battery life. However, despite earlier reports, Microsoft might actually bring some last-minute changes that could lead to an improvement in the battery life department. Join us after the break for more.

Microsoft Surface Pro: New Low Power Intel CPU To Bring Longer Battery Life ?

Last year we?ve talked at length about the Microsoft Surface Pro and about what you can expect from it in terms of price, release date and hardware specs. Nonetheless, when Microsoft announced the tablet, the one thing that has been greatly criticized was the expected battery life, which is supposed to be around half of what the Surface RT has to offer.

That?s really a problem and owning a tablet that can?t run more than a few hours without needing to be plugged in for a recharge can be rather annoying, and a deal breaker for some.

The good news however, is that Intel has recently announced a new line of low-power Ivy Bridge processors destined for tablets and ultrabooks, and the best part is that there?s also a chance that this new chip might end up in the Surface Pro, thus increasing the battery life tremendously.

These new mobile processors need less power to operate -as low as 7 watt which is a pretty big improvement when compared to the ongoing 17 watt chips. Last but not least, processing power should be up to five times greater than it is on an Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU.

Hopefully Microsoft will pick these new Intel SoCs up and perhaps the battery life on its upcoming Surface Pro will not pose an issue. We?ll keep you posted.

Thanks The Verge for the heads-up regarding this new low power Intel CPU.
